Elements of Graphic Design

The concept of space is so much more intricate than I had previously thought. From the chapter, I gathered that space is more about placement and structure. The chapter talks about how this is important in order to avoid overwhelming the reader. If there is too much on the page, it will look chaotic and unpleasing. Not only this but it may turn readers off from looking at the page, or just plainly distract them.

This leads me to think of physical space around me. One of the first things I think of is my workspace/ room. Similarly to space in graphic design, my space around me plays a huge role in my mood and productivity. If my workspace/room is messy with stuff everywhere, it is going to stress me out. Beyond that, I am not going to be able to focus on whatever it is I am working on. However, when it is clean and organized, I can easily work on things without getting distracted or bothered. In my physical environment, an example of empty space would be the walls, the floor, the background. It is just the space around the main focus. An example of active space would be the lights hanging in my room or decorations on my wall. These play a role in the design rather than just plainly being there like my walls are.
