Design Principles

Design Principles Compared to Real Life

Movement- Movement in real life would be driving. The roads you drive on will always lead you to some place just as they do in design.

White Space- White space in real life I would say is air/oxygen. As it is the negative space in design, air is the negative space in the world and every object, person, building, ext. is the space in the world that is more noticed.

Proportion- Proportion in real life is all over the place. Whether its a big water bottle and a small one or if its a big lake next to a large one, proportion is everywhere in the real world, just as it is in design.

Balance- Balance in the real world could be compared to food. As in portion sizes and types of food and mostly amounts of food people eat are relatively the same.

Hierarchy- Hierarchy in the real world is all over the place. There are hierarchy’s in family from the oldest to the youngest in the family tree, there are some in the work space as there are bosses and managers down to everyday workers.

Variety- Variety is also all over the world. When it comes to food, laws, rules, people, styles, and so on, variety is in every single type of people and object all over the world and it will never stop changing just like it won’t in design.

Gestalt Theory

The Gestalt Theory is how us humans see features on other people and how we put them together in our minds and how we do the same when looking at everything design we see. It is what helps us remember our family and friends and recognize everyone. The principles of design try to explain when and how our minds perceive different visual components as being part of the same group. Learning about this theory informs my opinion more on graphic design because I have a better idea about how I process designs I see without even realizing what I am actually getting out of what I am seeing.
