Elements of Graphic Design

The article, “Elements of Graphic Design” talks about the different types of space and their
importance. The concept of space is what really makes a design what it is. The article describes two different types of space-active space and empty space. Active space is what you see that fills the page. It is what the artist wants to be the main idea or focal point. It is the art or design that they create and put on the page. Empty space is what people would consider the background. It usually is a solid color, which makes the active space pop. It allows the active space to have a contrast with the background, so it allows the design to be seen. Without empty space, it would cause the design to look overcrowded or too busy, which would take away from the work. Reading this was interesting because I feel that when you look at a design, you never realize the importance of the empty space. Empty space is what allows a design to present itself in its best form, which is really crucial for art to look good to the eye. An example of empty and active space would be in my dorms. Looking at my wall, I have posters that would be the “active” space, while the white wall behind it would be the “empty” space.
