The Design and Play

In this reading, I learned about the process of graphic design and some of it I was not completely aware of it. We are limited to what we could actually create. It is hard to have students be able to express themselves when they have such a limitation. We are supposed to do what would be “correct” or appealing instead of create our own pieces. It is hard to recall a time when I was able to create something without some sort of limitation or way it was supposed to be created. Designs will always have order, proportion, harmony, rhythm, texture, space, and so much more. It is like the author is saying the ways of designs are always going to follow a pattern and never stray away from its original form.

The author also states how it is hard to stay within the box. When there are so many limitations to a project there is little to no room to grow which can make it considered as boring. When something is considered as boring it has hard to learn from it if it is not a major interest. So having a student be able to work outside of the strict guidelines they are able to teach themselves from their own perspective and grow. With that being said, I agree with what Paul Rand states of allowing students to teach themselves on their own perspectives.

With this reading, it made me think of my everyday life. I am always told how and what I am supposed to create, but I really am never able to create something of my own or something that is original. It is like we are all hard wired to do what is more pleasing to everyone else and not ourselves. To me, I wish schools will follow more of what Paul Rand is saying of letting students follow their own paths to create something and learn something from it.
