The Design and The Play
Reading this article has made me realize how much actually goes into graphic design and art. It showed me that graphic design is much more than throwing stuff together and that it is a very intricate process that has a lot of rules to it. Even though there are “rules” to graphic design, it is a very difficult thing to teach. It is based on mostly guidelines to follow. If you gave specific rules to follow, it limits the amount of creativity you can have in your art. It can make you feel “trapped” in your work, and not allow you to expand creatively. But at the same time, having rules and guidelines gives an artist motivation and a purpose to their art. I agree with Randall when he talks about the importance of teaching both theoretical, practical problems, and the importance of teaching art to kids at a young age through principles. When you teach to them at a young age, you allow them to creatively think for themselves, while also slowly introducing different concepts and guidelines to art so it is not as overwhelming to them to learn. It helps them better understand that art and graphic design is a creative outlet to make art freely, but also shows them the importance of guidelines to help them better explore and give purpose to their work.
