The Design + The Play Response

After reading The design and The Play by Paul Rand I realized a lot more about what I thought I had already known about art and graphic design and very much agreed with the authors perspectives. The world is full of graphic design everywhere, and I guess he pointed more of that out for me in all the examples. What I found most interesting was when he explained that an artist in the book “Hokusai” used geometric shapes to create different types of birds. Simple boxes were a guide to creating a life-like design. I find that so amazing in how the beginning of the process of drawing a chicken he had used shapes that we all know so well and can easily draw. I think it is such a good idea (thinking this before I’ve even tried it!). I am going to try to do it myself actually with the box method and then on my own (free hand), and compare the two. This method opened my eyes and made me realize that everyone can learn to draw and create! Even though it may come very easy for one person to know how to create, there is still hope for someone that doesn’t have that natural ability in art. Coming up with this process of using simple geometric shapes can bring so much joy to those who had wished they could draw, I think that is amazing.
