History of Graphic Design

Graphic design is an amazing and under appreciated form of work. Graphic design has changed tremendously throughout time and will continue to do so. Especially as new techniques and new technology are continuing to be made everyday. The amount of different uses and different directions a graphic designer can use are extraordinary. Through time, there have been many different forms and movements of graphic design created. The ones that interest me the most is the Arts and crafts movement (1870-1914), Surrealism, Cubism (1907-1921), and Constructivism (1919-1934).

Arts and Crafts Movement

In this movement, a man named William Morris (1834-1986). led the way. This was a movement The philosophy of the arts and crafts movement was that handcrafted forms brought physical and spiritual pleasure to ones work. I appreciate the arts and crafts movement because of how personable it was and hoe everything was done by head and not using computers and programs that help do most of the work.

Surrealism

Surrealism is personally one of my favorite movements throughout the history of graphic design. Its extravagant uses of art is what catches the eye. Surrealism is not just from graphic design but it can relate to many forms of art in history.

Cubism

For this movement, Pablo Picasso was the most known for these techniques. Cubism was a simple, yet difficult type of graphic design. In my opinion, it is similar to surrealism with its strange techniques it uses to build objects or faces. It is a very unique technique and is still seen everywhere these days.

Constructivism

Constructivism was mostly meant for propaganda in the time period it was made. Constructivism was concerned mostly with space, materials, and movement. Its intent was to move all of the arts from expression of personal style toward a collective style based on the machine.

To Conclude

Graphic design is definitely an under appreciated form of art. Over the course of this semester, I have learned so many things to make art using graphic design techniques. I have learned to value the history from this article and I gained a better understanding of where the techniques we used and what we saw came from.
