Graphic Design History

Introduction

When reading about the history of art design it shocked me that this was used during very important parts of history. I always think of graphic design as a new and upcoming thing that just started to become a thing. But it actually has been around for a very long time. Graphic design in a lot of political and economic situations to try and get peoples different opinions and trying to make them also pick a side with propaganda. Art design is everywhere if you notice it or not. The four time periods of art history that I found interesting are Surrealism, Futurism, Dada, Psychedelic language.

Dada

The Dada period happened during World War 1. This was a type of art that went against social norms. All they wanted to do was create things that they used during this time period. It also was to see the perspectives of what is happening in the world during that time.  This movement was able to normalize photo montages and to make daily things an art piece with a deeper meaning. I thought this was interesting because I would never even really think of this as art, until you understand the background of the pictures. And this is important for history to see these pictures to see what is going on during that time.

Surrealism

After the dada period it was not expected by its viewers of the art or the design. This is the whole point of surrealism to catch the person’s eye. And want them to look more in depth in the picture. When I first saw this it also shocked me. I was not expecting it to be scary in a way. But at the same time I don’t know what I was expecting for surrealism.  The person who created this was Man Ray; he was an artist who pushed the transition from Dada to Surrealism. He kept his real name disclosed at the time because of anti-semitism during this time in the United States.  The artist explains that he made it look like photography,he did it by creating different shapes and shadows that could look three dimensional. Those were some reasons why surrealism interests me.

Futurism

In 1909 Fillipio Marinetti created Futurism and it went on for 10 years. This art is very modern and different. It captures movement in a factual way and not making it creative in the sense of not adding more than the way the picture depicts. The reason why I chose to talk about futurism is because even though it’s so simple it is also so detailed in its own way. This picture can be of all types of shapes and colors but the main design of the picture is still simple but stands out.  During this time people were not used to this; they were used to seeing paintings and posters that are not like futurism at all in the museums. The reason why I am interested in futurism is because of the cool ays it shows movement and is so simple but also so detailed.

Psychedelic Language

This movement started up in San Francisco. It started with the lifestyle of people who take LSD and other hallucinogenic drugs. This helped them think more about the box and create a bigger idea of what they were creating.  This art was shown through light shows, posters. And the people who created this work all had the same idea of counterculture.  I found this interesting. This art type is so broad. Anyone who is tripping could create anything they want and call it an art piece if they keep on making more and get good at the ideas that will sell. So there could be all kinds of colors and designs or it could be a poster that has all kinds of hidden messages and you will never know what you get because it all depends on the trip they had.

Summary

My favorite art period that I thought was the most interesting is Psychedelic language. I like that it could be a broad range of things and it wasn’t a certain type of artwork itself. They just had to take drugs and allow their mind to go places they usually can’t sober. I find that interesting because they were normalizing drugs in a sense of allowing your mind to get outside the box and allow the trip to take you. And in society that is usually looked very down upon but the art world took it in and soaked it in. This project really opened me up to see how many different types of art and designs there are. And how it really affects society and how important it is over history.
