{"id":13762,"date":"2021-05-25T01:16:10","date_gmt":"2021-05-25T05:16:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kscgd.com\/2021spring\/gdp1\/?p=13762"},"modified":"2021-05-25T01:18:25","modified_gmt":"2021-05-25T05:18:25","slug":"09-graphic-design-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kscgd.com\/2021spring\/gdp1\/2021\/05\/25\/09-graphic-design-history\/","title":{"rendered":"09 Graphic Design History"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Introduction<\/h2>\n<p>When thinking of graphic design, my brain immediately goes to working on a computer.\u00a0 This article helped me realize it goes way farther back than just working on an old monitor.\u00a0 I wouldn&#8217;t have ever thought that what the Egyptians wrote on walls would be a form of graphic design! I began this class with a stubborn head thinking we&#8217;d only sit on computers and occasionally doodle on mac&#8217;s.\u00a0 However, the more research we do and projects we complete, my perspective on graphic design has completely changed.<\/p>\n<h2>Futurism: 1910-1918<\/h2>\n<p>One of my favorite parts about futurism is how creative artists would get with designing the text on posters and almost distorting photos in a purposeful way.\u00a0 It reminds me of old cartoons I&#8217;d watch growing up as a kid.\u00a0 I&#8217;m impressed with how designers worked to show noise and speed by breaking the &#8216;rules&#8217; and therefore anything NOT considered to be art, would fall into the dada movement.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.designishistory.com\/1850\/dada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urinal<\/a> made me laugh, but I also like the fact that, that&#8217;s it.\u00a0 It&#8217;s that simple.\u00a0 Anyone can easily create something to be considered dada.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/art\/artists\/kurt-schwitters-1912\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kurt Schwitters<\/a> is a well know dadaist designer.\u00a0 Despite being such a simple concept when it came to the art portion, this was really more about the movement and taking a political stand.\u00a0 Artists used many different references and comparisons when it came to getting creative on how they&#8217;d take a stand with things.\u00a0 Whether it was big or small, everyone has their own voice and opinion, I really enjoy how the Dada Era was able to help so many express themselves.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13770\" src=\"https:\/\/kscgd.com\/2021spring\/gdp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/download-13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"187\" height=\"233\" \/> \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13772\" src=\"https:\/\/kscgd.com\/2021spring\/gdp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/images-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"152\" height=\"236\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13771\" src=\"https:\/\/kscgd.com\/2021spring\/gdp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/images-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"187\" height=\"240\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>De Stijl: 1917-1931<\/h2>\n<p>I love how clean and organized this period of design history is.\u00a0 You see it quite often now with modern houses and architecture.\u00a0 \u00a0I find it to look very sleek, and <a href=\"https:\/\/99designs.com\/blog\/design-history-movements\/know-your-design-history-the-utopian-de-stijl-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Piet Mondrian&#8217;s<\/a> art even reminds me of stain glass windows.\u00a0 This would be a fun project to try and tackle in class, maybe it&#8217;s even a way to take geometric translations a step farther.\u00a0 It&#8217;s almost as if there&#8217;s different layers when it comes to colors, and a completely different portion of layers when it comes t0o patterns, lines, shapes.\u00a0 Somehow they all fit together very cohesively.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/rietveldoriginals.com\/en\/gerrit-rietveld\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gerrit Rietveld<\/a> does an amazing job with de stijl in architecture.\u00a0 They might not look like the comfiest chairs to sit in, but still very appealing to the eyes when looking at the entire space.<\/p>\n<p>.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13776\" src=\"https:\/\/kscgd.com\/2021spring\/gdp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/images-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"181\" height=\"228\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13774\" src=\"https:\/\/kscgd.com\/2021spring\/gdp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/images-1-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"162\" height=\"231\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13775\" src=\"https:\/\/kscgd.com\/2021spring\/gdp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/images-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"239\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kscgd.com\/2021spring\/gdp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/images-2-1.jpg 224w, https:\/\/kscgd.com\/2021spring\/gdp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/images-2-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/kscgd.com\/2021spring\/gdp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/images-2-1-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 239px) 100vw, 239px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Psychedelic Language: 1960&#8217;s<\/h2>\n<p>The one word I would use to describe the retro-ness of this design period is, &#8220;groovy.&#8221; I&#8217;m obsessed with the play of colors, the flow of both the text and the art design.\u00a0 I feel like just by looking at a lot of the art created during this time period, you&#8217;re able to grasp and go back in time to what it was like to be alive back then.\u00a0 I&#8217;m fascinated by the idea that designers such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wes-wilson.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wes Wilson<\/a> took advantage of hand writing his posters to create secret messages for others. Plus many of these artists are probably still alive with them only being our grandparent&#8217;s age.\u00a0 This is definitely one of my favorite points in design history.\u00a0 I loved doing the color translations project in class.\u00a0 Being able to pick color schemes for that reminds me a bit of the funky <a href=\"https:\/\/network9.biz\/how-the-psychedelic-60s-changed-design-forever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">colors<\/a> artists would use with designing back then.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13781\" src=\"https:\/\/kscgd.com\/2021spring\/gdp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/download-15.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"157\" height=\"238\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13782\" src=\"https:\/\/kscgd.com\/2021spring\/gdp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/images-3-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"184\" height=\"239\" \/> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13783\" src=\"https:\/\/kscgd.com\/2021spring\/gdp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/images-4-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"169\" height=\"239\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Summary<\/h2>\n<p>Psychedelic Language is probably my favorite design point in history out of the four.\u00a0 I love the vibrant colors that come with it.\u00a0 I one hundred percent think today&#8217;s teens and modern society is influenced by these different parts in history.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve noticed how graphic design can be both very simple or full of details and still serve a certain purpose when it comes to relaying a certain message to your audience.
