Brand and Identity Readings

I really liked the phrase “you only remember the [brands] you love” that was mentioned in the designing brand reading. This makes me recognize that I need to be more alert in my designs, creating things that not only I like, but also things that I know others will like, which is why critique is so important in the design world. I took a class last year called Social Media Fundamentals, and I learned about branding and what is needed to help create that, and how to adhere to your/find the perfect audience. This reading gave me further insight into branding by learning how to start the process and what branding ideals there are. The values consist of the meaning, authenticity, and commitment, etc. This helps me know how characters and brands came to be because it goes deeper than just something they want to sell- there needs to be a why and how.

The logo reading gave me more insight into logo creation. These semiotics are a functional sign that one can look at and instantly recognize it and/or know what its message is. Logos need to be unique, making them memorable. Another phrase that this specific reading mentioned was “a logoless company is a faceless man.” I like this phrase because it backs up my claim that logos need to be memorable. Without an image, it would make a brand less recognizable and could make it easily misconstrued with other brands that might have similar messages.
