Overall reaction to film
Overall, I had a good time watching the film. I liked the designs for the spirits and that we are able to see their wide range of personalities, whether directly or indirectly (when they are possessing someone). I was also impressed with the performances; I am often distracted by glaring generational dissonance when watching movies about Gen Z high schoolers, though the characters in Talk to Me were refreshingly believable. There were a few things I found confusing about it, though, like whether or not the spirits are real people who have died or separate supernatural entities. It seemed to me that they are more in the vain of demons than ghosts, though Mia’s appearance as a spirit at the very end would imply that at least some of them were once alive. I was also confused by the ending, as it wasn’t clear to me whether Mia was possessed for the entirety of the final sequence or was fading in between worlds. I’m sure that there will be no small amount of in-class discussion on the intricacies of the plot lol.
Three Characters
- (not) Rhea
- Toe-sucking spirit
I think that it would be cool to build a brand around one of the spirits, and as someone who gravitates towards the gothic and macabre I’d be well within my comfort zone.
- Cookie
I have a sneaking suspicion that this will be a very sought-after character for this project, assuming it’s allowed. I’d probably incorporate her pink bandana and something to do with being locked out of the room when the teens are communicating with the spirits (a locked door, or perhaps a key?).
