Overall Response
I really enjoyed watching Talk to Me, it wasn’t my first time seeing the movie, but watching it while specifically trying to find the nuances of all the different characters allowed me to reflect on it in a new way. In my first viewing, my focus was primarily on the main character Mia whereas this time I was trying to figure out the motivation behind all the characters besides her. One of the reasons that I enjoyed this movie so much was the way that it uses this fictional haunted hand to represent the very real presence of drug addiction and the way that it can take over someone’s life along with the community of people who are also aware of it’s use.
Interesting Characters
Hayley
I found Hayley’s character to be very polarizing where I would get so annoyed at them in all of their instigating ways but then I could completely see where you could get the feeling of wanting them to think you are cool. They are the exact type of person I would have been trying to impress in high school.
Mia’s Father
Mia’s father is not very present in the movie partially due to the figure’s emotional absence in Mia’s life. Although he is not on screen much, the weight of his absence is very present as it has caused a lot of strife for Mia. His lack of support for her in her mother’s death has lead her to the place we find her at the beginning of the movie.
Jade
I was quite curious about Jade’s character because although we do see a bit more of what her life and family dynamic is like than we do for other characters, we don’t know much about her personality outside of Mia’s perspective. What is she doing on a week where a haunted hand isn’t destroying her life?
