This is essential to truly get the experience and do this project successfully.
Watch the movie chosen by the class with an eye on the variety of characters and what makes them a unique part of the plot / interest of the film.
Write down a few salient or inspiring quotes from different characters as you watch.
Take some notes (it would be ideal if you take notes on a second watch)
Have a pen and paper and take notes while the film is playing. Jot down characters that intrigue you. Stop the film if you have to and see them again.
Overall reaction to film
Write a rich paragraph or so that communicates your reaction to film. What was the film ‘about’ in your perspective. Avoid reading online reviews. Speak from your own mind. Respond critically to the decisions made by the director and the performances of the characters. What do you think? Cite specifics references to screen action.
Select Three Characters
Choose three characters and describe them in detail. Leave Amelie alone for now and choose characters across the spectrum:
- The truly marginal (background characters with 1-2 lines)
- Characters that very briefly appear (supporting characters)
- Characters that are more central to the story (secondary and primary characters but NOT the main leads)
The characters you write about will likely not be the one you create a brand for.
Include a photo/screen capture for each character.
Answer these questions for each character. This should be able to paint a descriptive picture as if you were describing the person to another stranger:
- Who is the character?
- What do they do in the film? How do their actions add to the narrative?
- What do they care about? What would you imagine that they care about? Be inventive.
- What motivates them? What would they be interested in outside of the lens the movie shows?
Be prepared to discuss your selected characters and ideas.
