When I started reading about the history of receipts, I was surprised by how old they are. People were keeping track of purchases as far back as ancient Mesopotamia using clay tablets, and then later on receipts showed up on papyrus in Egypt, on paper in Europe, and eventually as the printed slips we know today with thermal paper. What stood out to me most was how something I usually think of as just a small piece of paper actually has such a long history and yet still has problems as it continues to evolve. A lot of modern-day receipts are printed on thermal paper that isn’t good for the environment and can even have chemicals that rub off on people’s hands. With this issue, people have turned to choosing digital receipts when they can. I had come across a Business Insider article that explained receipts can even have tiny bits of plastic in them, which made me realize how wasteful they can be. Receipts are not only a really old part of how people did business but also something we’re still figuring out how to handle today, and that even a small choice like going digital can make a difference.
