Receipt Post Vachon

Receipts have been a subject I had never given much thought to until Monday. For all my life, I had said, “Thanks, you can toss that!” to every cashier I have ever come in contact with. I had always thought of them as a waste of paper, but if these readings have taught me anything, it is that they are much more than that. From the beginnings of stone tablet recordings to the modernized paper receipts, purchases have always needed to be recorded somehow. The idea of the paper receipt going away in favor of a digitalized version did catch my attention in one of the articles, however. As there has been a rise in online shopping, the need for paper receipts certainly isn’t as high as it used to be, and with there now being an option to enter your email to receive a digital receipt rather than an in-store one, while the option of that right now is certainly nice I see the transision beggining but I do see digital receipts taking more time to become more acclimated into our everyday.

I do love the humanity in these receipts. Even in stone tablets, there was often talk of gossip or a purchase that had gone wrong; receipts today still have that touch. The Bored Panda article explains mostly through pictorial examples why this is. From some establishments having custom text inside, having fun games on them, color customizations, or even just a machine error. All these things, if noticed, can uplift a person’s day or make them think about something outside of themselves. Using this format as a warm-up assignment has really got me pumped up about what we are going to get up to next class, learning about the little things like this that people often take for granted is always so interesting to me.

As asked, I went and looked for some inspiration Why Digital Receipts Are Good for Business, and the Planet | SAP Concur. This article piqued my interest as someone who cares about the environment as well as design. The article talks about how paper receipts actually contain chemicals that are bad for people to handle. Moving to digital receipts will not only be good for us but also for business efficiency. The need for paper is ultimately becoming obsolete, but that also begs the question of how much information we will lose over time.
