Beirut Poster Analysis

  • What are the primary and secondary hooks?/ The primary hook is the word “THINKING”. The secondary hook is the medium-sized text reading “THINKING BIG DIAGRAMS…”
  • Count the levels of type./ I notice around 7 levels or type: Large primary hook bold text, all caps secondary hook, smaller all caps secondary hook, bold tertiary header, all caps regular tertiary text, regular tertiary text, smaller regular text.
  • Discuss how it navigates./ I find that the eye travels around the poster well. You start by noticing the giant text in the background, quickly followed by reading the secondary text, which then brings your eye down the the tertiary body text. I find that the tertiary text leads your eye back up to the primary text, allowing you to continue digesting the information on the poster.
  • What aspect of it creates energy?/ Overlapping text makes the most energy in this poster. The secondary text cutting through the negative space in the primary text creates great visual interest. This is repeated in other levels of type.
  • How does it handle white space?/ This poster handles white space extremely well and uses it as its primary point of interest. This poster is specifically playing with white space and how it interacts with text. That, to me, is what handling white space perfectly would look like.
  • What makes it work?/ Again, I think the play with white space, along with largely contrasting typographic hierarchy, is what makes this poster work. As these posters are not utilizing color, Beirut is utilizing other techniques for success. (Primarily) Three different sizes of text play into each other, creating strong visual interest.
