“A skilled designer uses a grid actively, not passively, allowing the modules to suggest intriguing shapes and surprising placements for elements”.  What made this resonate so much for me was that it really emphasized the importance of how information placed in a grid works. The grid is not just the starting point of a design idea, it’s the scaffolding behind the whole design itself. It is what decides the flow of the entire design, beginning the designer with a rough shape to better actualize the intended design.

What did you discover about grids that you did not know?

Different image-displaying platforms will favor certain sized images according to what appears best within their platform. Google Images prefers horizontal-leaning graphics, while Pinterest accommodates the infinite scrolling desire of their viewers by preferring vertical-leaning design.

What aspects of this reading could apply to how you take on your posters?

The first quote that resonated with me (In Question 1) also helped me take better consideration in designing my own posters. I learned to look into what grid I use to design my posters, and what kind of design elements would work best in the grids that I work with. I learned to work actively, not passively, with my grids, adhering to them as much as possible and when necessary, but to also introduce breaks in the grid when applicable.
