Choose the top three gestalt principles at work in your poster
- Emergence
- Continuity/Continuation
- Similarity
…and write a few sentences bout how each principle works.
Emergence: Within the type of the Five Below logo in the near center of the poster, not all of the elements of the letter formations are present. However, one is able to fill in the blanks of the missing elements and determine that it indeed says “Five Below”. It is similar to how we as humans read quickly. We readily observe the first and last letter of a word, and the length. It doesn’t seem to matter what order the letters are in between the first and last letter, our brains are still able to read the words effectively. Tihs snetcene gveis an eaxpmle.
Continuity/Continuation: The direction and size of certain lines of text near to each other suggest that they are grouped together as a single element. This can be seen in the bottom right of the poster where the expiration date, chip IND, Store number, and other bits of payment information are grouped within the same black due to their visual similarity and proximity to each other. Continuation also helps group information in this poster by fluxing between regular type and bold-faced type.
Similarity: Similarly to the elements of continuity, information within this poster is grouped based upon how similar they look to one another. Even though the date and time, the “Thank You For Shopping!” element, and the store address are located in different areas, they are grouped based upon their similar colors, sizes, and direction they are facing.
What is the hierarchy of information and how does it create meaning?
1 SALE
Sale is the largest element, covering the entire poster.
2 Phone Number
The phone number is large and is highlighted by the switch in colors, creating contrast.
3 Store Logo (FIVE BELOW)
The logo blends in more than the phone number does, but it is still large and noticeable.
4 Thank you for shopping, Address, and Date and Time
All are designed similarly, and slightly blend into the background design, but are larger and more noticeable than the smaller bits of information.
5 All other smaller information
The smaller bits that are usually read last or not at all due to their size and placement within the design.
