3×3

3X3 DATA SET:

USA

ABOUT

The United States is located in North America, bordering both the North Atlantic Ocean and the North Pacific Ocean, between Canada and Mexico. In size, it is about half the size of Russia.

DENMARK

ABOUT

Denmark is located in northern Europe, bordering the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, on a peninsula north of Germany. It is slightly less than twice the size of Massachusetts; about two-thirds the size of West Virginia. Denmark’s climate is temperate, humid and overcast with mild, windy winters and cool summers.

TIMOR-LEST

ABOUT

Timor-Leste is located in Southeast Asia, northwest of Australia in the Lesser Sunda Islands at the eastern end of the Indonesian archipelago. It is an island slightly larger than Connecticut and almost half the size of Maryland. The terrain is mountainous, and the climate is tropical, hot, and humid with distinct rainy and dry seasons.

DATA STORY

I wanted the story with the data to be centered around the “Energy consumption per-capita” statistics I found. It was very interesting to look at the contrasting numbers of energy usages across countries. I chose to compare the US’s immense energy usage per person to that of Denmark’s, a country that generates the majority of their energy more sustainably. I liked the fact that the statistic is per-person, so the size of the country doesn’t impact the data. It only reflects on the average lifestyle of a person in a specific country. The US uses almost triple the energy per-person in comparison to Denmark, and almost 50 times more than Timor-Leste, the country I hadn’t heard of before. The data set also includes each country’s energy generating capacity, which I thought would be interesting in relation to the populations of the three countries. These three points of data form the story of energy production and consumption.
