United States

The United States began as 13 colonies in 1776 broke from Britain, and gained 37 new states over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries to result in the 50 states it has today. It is widely considered the most powerful nation state in the world.

Kiribati

Kiribati is made up of three island groups: the Gilbert Islands, the Line Islands, and the Phoenix Islands. It became an independent nation in 1979 after being placed under a protectorate by the UK over the course of 1892-1972.

France

France is considered one of the most modern countries in the world, as well as a leader of European nations. Its cooperation with Germany has been a huge part of the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of the euro in 1999.

Data Story

I wanted my data story to focus on income inequality and how big the difference can be between the richest and the poorest members of a country. I was actually surprised by the results, as I expected the gap to be quite a bit wider in the USA given the number of billionaires there are. That said, it’s still a pretty big gap, and bigger than either of the other countries I looked at.
