Layout Ideas:

Opening Spread: Contains content guide and opening image of a large vast field of farmand, or something else that feels general to the topic.  I want to distort this image in some sort of way, give it some sort of twist, whether that be typographically or imagery-wise (collage in mind), I want to use fruit and or vegetables in a clever way to also format the summary information in an interesting way. I think summarizing the content of my magazine may be nice for people who may not know about nutrition, or agriculture, and its effects on the world. Perhaps this will be my “Author’s Statement”.

Main Article: I want my main article to focus on the modernization of agriculture, an article about the history of that from pre industrial to modern day may be a smart move, I was also thinking about food regulations, as food production became more about profit, it got cheaper tastier, less nutritious, and I wanted to include a history of regulations as well. A graph that may go good with this is a chart of farm sizes versus farm number over several years (more food, less land).

Side Articles: An article about invasive species, these species are usually introduced through importation, which I would also like to cover on its own. An article about mass monoculture and its effects on ecosystems that are important, ex. rainforests.  An article on the meat industry, specifically, and the mass waste that it produces. An article about smart farming, and how you can farm sufficiently without causing significant harm. An interview with a food policy advocate where she describes her journey into the field and her thoughts on the state of food waste and climate change. An article about the effects pesticides have on farmers and information on how fertilizers cause dead zones in the ocean.

Single Spreads:

  1. A spread that shows the food waste in America
  2. Spread of recipe(s) you can use to eat sustainably
  3. Spread of dead cow, livestock, and a gut-wrenching sentence or two
  4. My map/guide of what is farmed in which area of the U.S.
  5. GMO produce and organic produce size comparison
  6. Fake advertisement, missing tomato, some kind of joke/gag
  7. Guide to compost: what to do/what not to
