Elements of Graphic Design

Many times when creating graphic design or visual art, we might ask ourselves what would be visually pleasing to a viewer. Although we can never exactly pick the minds of our intended audience,  there are certain elements of design that can be manipulated to keep the viewers attention. No matter the medium of design- industrial, visual, interior, or motion, the process of design works with manipulating unrelated parts, and organizing them to create a structured plan and flow. While there is no right or wrong with visual arts, we use our better judgment to organize this information in a way we see helpful or appealing to an audience.

When creating graphic design, by manipulating the use of space, color, size, we can direct the viewers eye to focus where we as the artist intended it. The use, or lack of use of space can be vital to encouraging a positive association between the audience and your intended message. Contrast, consistency, and flexibility within a space can effectively connect the viewer with your intended message, shaping their thought with text and imagery. When I think of manipulation of space in terms of being “empty” or “active”- I think of interior design. Interior design is based on the idea of transforming physical spaces in the home, to create a space that is pleasing to the home owner. When I think of empty space, I am reminded of a small spare room in a home, one someone might not have purpose for. You are able to turn this unused, “empty” space into an active space by purchasing furniture for a home office, gym, or craft room. When I think of an “active” space, I think of an open concept living space, which is actively lived in and used by the members of the house hold.
