Classic Type Faces

There are five classic type faces that are pretty well known. They are helvetica, century, baskerville, didot, and garamond. The two that I will be comparing are helvetica and century. Helvetica is one of the most used type faces out there. Century is well known as well, but not like helvetica. In my personal opinion, I prefer century over helvetica. Before this class, I did not even think twice of helvetica so it had made no impact on my life as it has for others. Personally, I feel century is more sophisticated than helvetica. Century has what is called a serif also known as “feet”. Helvetica has more straight letters while century has a platform on the bottom of its letters which to me gives more of a professional look. Helvetica just seems overused and overrated. The r’s in helvetica are straight while the r’s in century have a tail that gives it character. To me, helvetica seems boring and has no flare or nothing that makes it stand out. For instance, century’s g’s have a loop to them, but helvetica does not. Instead helvetica’s g is more plain and just has an unconnected g unlike century which is connected. Little details like that may not seem like much, but to me every detail counts. It makes up a font to make it stand out from the rest. I just prefer century over helvetica.
