04 Rotoscope Animation Concept

Describe what you will be filming, rotoscoping, and ultimately animating:

For this project, I will be filming my African Grey parrot dancing. I will also be recording a car moving, as well as my cat. I will then rotoscope each of these things. For my parrot, I will be keeping him in the rotoscope so he doesn’t appear as a blob. I will then change the background to be more fun. I’m thinking a rainforest background could be pretty cool. For the car, I want to rotoscope the car out of the background and add something fun and trippy inside of it. For my cat, I also want to keep her in focus, but change the background. This is because I think I could add an interesting background behind her once she is rotoscoped.

List what kind of rotoscoping effects you will explore:

As for the rotoscoping effects, there are a few I would like to explore. I would like to make each of my rotoscopes slide out of the animation frame at a different side. For example, when my parrot is done dancing, I want his rotoscope to slide out of the frame to the left to make room for the car’s rotoscope to fall into place immediately after. I then want the car to drive out of the animation frame by moving upwards to make room for my cat’s rotoscope to fall into frame. I then want my cat’s rotoscope to slide out of the animation frame to the right in order to lead to the surprise suck back at the end of the animation and have a good cut-off for a finish to my animation. I then want to try possibly having each rotoscope fade slightly as it moves out of frame (?) I think this would be a nice touch and would really add to my animation.

Detail the music and sound effects you want to use:

For the music on this project, I am thinking I should start with something upbeat. I then want to have the music slowly fade out as the next rotoscoped image comes onto the screen, and then for the music to eventually die out and another song that is more of a whistle-like sound to play. I really want to mess with fading the music in and out with this project, as I have struggled with doing so before and think it would work so well with this project and make the rotoscoping effects look even cooler! I then want the whistle SFX to play for the majority of the rest of the animation and then gradually fade to something that is on a slightly different track than the other music that would have played by now in my animation. I then want the last song to sort of begin to fade out at the end and then a loud suck back to play right as the animation ends. I think that would make a cool effect and really bring everything in my animation together.

Explain how you will synchronize your music and sound effects to your animation

I am going to be very careful with the lining up of my SFX and music during this project so everything runs smoothly and sounds the best of its ability. In order to attain this, I am going to put a click track from the last project in the background of my animation before I add any music or SFX. I will then line up each beat in the track with each of the movements in my three animations. This is important so all of my parrot’s dance steps, the car’s movement, and my cat are all perfectly synchronized. This will make it easier to place SFX in my animation once everything is lined up, as it will make it harder for another movement in the animation to throw off the beat of the SFX. It will also make it easier to place the music and have it flow more nicely and make sense.
