5 Kern Quiz

As others have said, this quiz felt a little flawed. It felt more like practice than an actual quiz because of the amount of times you had to take it to understand how some of the fonts worked. I found the thicker ones with closer letters were the easiest to get. When they got thin and/or far apart it really just turned into a guessing game. The most memorably difficult one involved a capitol “T”, where I would never have been able to guess off the bat how close the second letter was supposed to be

After taking this quiz several times I finally got a grade I was happy with. I found this quiz to be a bit tedious when trying to get the letter spacing to be perfect. Even after several times of trying it I still felt as if the way I was spacing them out looked good but didn’t match up correctly to get me a high score. I found the Frutiger type face and the FF Meta Black to be most difficult to match up perfectly and got the lowest scores on those two.

I found this quiz to be extremely tedious and frustrating.  I got a 98 but only after like my 20th try,  I had such a hard time figuring out where some of the letters were suppose to go,  I feel like theres no real correct answer, except for what looks the best.  It’s cool that someone made this, but I think that it’s way too difficult unless you take the quiz 20 times.

I took this quiz two times, the first time I got an 86 which I was okay with but I knew I could do better. The second time I kind of rushed through it but I was familiar with the kerning that had to be done in order to  get a good grade so I fixed the kerning on the words and took a step back to see if the words looked good and continued onto the next. I didn’t really find any of the words too challenging. The only word that I would consider to be difficult was Yvess because of the Y and the lowercase v. Overall I didn’t struggle to fix the kerning, it was all about what just looked normal to me. Yeah I could have moved a few letters over a smidge to get a 100 but I am happy enough with my score that I can accept it to be put into the grade book as it is. I will always be happy with an A!

I took this quiz multiple times to achieve this score. I had a lot of trouble with the words that needed a more kerning than others such as “Toronto” and Quijote.” I found it easier to kern the words that only required a little adjusting and harder to find the right spot for the letters that needed to be moved greatly.

practicing kerning was easy but doing it correctly was at times challenging

The hardest words that I came across was “Quitjote” and “Yvess” because of the type of font and the spacing we had to utilize between the first and last letter. I thought it was a fun little quiz and really tested your eyes.

For my quiz score I got an 88%. I noticed that the ticker the letters are the easier it was to kern and when you had thinner letters it took longer. I found the the word Toronto to be challenging because of the T and how spaced out it needed to be. I also found the word Quijote to be challenging because of the end of the Q and how it had a tail at the end.

After taking the Kern Quiz many, many times, the final grade that I decided to use was a 94. Although it took me a while to obtain a score like this, I though the quiz was very eye-opening on how my skills of kerning were. I really liked that this quiz gave you the opportunity to manually do it. For me the words that I struggled with the most was xylophone and yvess. I’m not exactly sure what about these two words made me struggle so much but I continued to struggle with these two words. Overall, I enjoyed this quiz and think this helped a lot.

The quiz itself was fun and challenging. I could have done better than 87, but I found it difficult to kern with capital letters. I would leave too big of a space between capital and lowercase, I think because my eyes are so used to it. I’m going to keep trying to do better, overall it was interesting and I’m glad we had time in class to complete the quiz.
