Before Photoshop…

I was surprised to learn that photo editing has been around as long as photos themselves had. It was interesting to see the humor and creativity from so long ago and how similar it is to ours today despite such limited technology. What we can do in a second now, back then took them lots of practice and time to master. They would have to manually cut out and paste images to others, or take a picture using the same film to get similar editing effects to today. The simple fact that we have an undo button makes what we have today ten times easier than what they had before. If they messed up, one or both of their images could be rendered completely useless. It’s wonderful and poetic that Jerry Uelsmann continues to use old techniques for photo editing instead of today’s technology. InĀ general, I thought it was cool to understand the origins of photo editing and to be able to appreciate how technology has made this process easier.

Senticous

To be prickly; thorny

This is the lost word I chose. It’s interesting that the lost word dictionary has it as only being relevant for a year, and I wonder why it stopped being used so quickly.

Sizzle

To create a hissing sound, often as a product of intense heat

I learned it originated from the 1500s, which seems odd because I tend to think of our everyday words as having existed forever.

Tension

A state of being stretched or strained

It originates from the Latin word tensionem, which means “a stretching”.

Alluring

To be attractive or to draw in; enticing; seductive; charming

It originates from the Anglo-French word “allurer”.

As others have said, this quiz felt a little flawed. It felt more like practice than an actual quiz because of the amount of times you had to take it to understand how some of the fonts worked. I found the thicker ones with closer letters were the easiest to get. When they got thin and/or far apart it really just turned into a guessing game. The most memorably difficult one involved a capitol “T”, where I would never have been able to guess off the bat how close the second letter was supposed to be
