Befoe Photoshop…
I found these articles to be interesting to see how photographers like Jerry Uelsmann and others like him, used there creativity and there understanding of exposer within the dark room to make collaged like images by using multiple negatives. Giving the world the first look at mixed negatives that gives the worlds its first look at surrealism thought photography, manipulating peoples visually appearance through the medium. This created a medium that was what Jerry said was for him sub concusses yet visually produced a deeper meaning from within. It was show in the Met exhibition called Faking It: Manipulated Photography Before Photoshop. which it shows image created in that way that comments entertainment, political, fantasy…, etc. Technology has made it so easy to make the images, it’s interesting to see how this was made before the technology I believe seeing them in person would truly make them outstanding.

I became interested in graphic design after I had learned about 3D printing. I’m a BFA studio arts major thinking about becoming a duel major within the graphic design field. What had put me off to graphic design before was that I didn’t care much for working with computers. However after using the software for the 3D printing, it opened my eyes to the possible of becoming a graphic designer due to the fact it could expand my skill set.
What I took away from the reading was how graphic design has always been around us yet we have just recently become more of a graphic world due to technology. With technology the jobs involving graphic design have expanded to involving multi-media. Becoming a graphic designer, this article advises you to stay relevant with the times. Going to concerts reading the paper watching tv, going out into the world are prime examples. To be able to bring a relevant/creativeness taught process to your work.
I found advertising design the most compelling when the work of the artist is able to represent a company through their logo while also being visually appealing. Advertising is known to play a significant apart in marketing. This helps the company identify themselves and create their own personality identity. These designs are important because the images have to visually appealing yet also have to convey a graphic message to the customers. Which in would take up a bit of the customer’s memory, so the next time they pass by the product they are more likely to purchase. Increasing sales for the company.

Typeface was fascinating to learn to learn about because I truly didn’t know how much design and thought goes into each one. Also trying to create something that has been done billions of times in various different ways, yet sit there are new typefaces and people who strive to not be limited. To make a type face you have to design a new letterforms, fonts (inducing, variations as bold and italic), ligatures, letters, numeral and punctuations. Which requires a lot of time working on computers and yet is “May not be obvious to the general public”.

I thought the movie was very informing, before I was not very aware of the history of typefaces or how it had been influenced/created. This movie moved throughout history by interviewing graphic designer and art directors from the time and their experience and lastly how this functioning art evolved.
Wim Crouwel had this to say about Helvetica “The meaning is in the content of the text and not in the typeface, and that is why we loved Helvetica very much.” This is a modern, clean, clear, legible typestyle. Making it the perfect neutral typeface to use within the commercial business. This typeface was created on a grid by Max Miedinger with Eduard Hoffmann in 1957 in Switzerland.

By this typeface becoming so popular and becoming the norm for the typeface in the word it had influenced graphic artist and art directors to start looking at words in a different way to provide and alternative looking typefaces. This begins a movement of artist like David Carson experimenting with design. David Carson was quoted in this movie. “Don’t confuse legality with communication just because something is legible doesn’t mean it communicates and, more important doesn’t mean it communicates the right thing” which I think perfectly describes his work. His work has a message more important then the message trying to convey within the words, he adds the emotion to the words by altering these things placement, spaces, portion, and weight.

This movie also goes in-depth about Erik Spiekermann who created typefaces that used words to communicate a message in a less “grunge”/abstract style. In fact it looked more personal as he describes in this quote “A real typeface needs rhythm, needs contrast, it comes from handwriting, and that’s why I can read you’re handwriting, you can read mine” His work look like hand writing with little creative thing to give it definition of style.
