The way a piece of art or a photograph is presented to the viewer changes the reaction that viewer will have to the piece of art/photograph and the easiest way to influence that reaction is through the frame. A frame previously would’ve been a physical thing that the artist would make themselves and they would have to paint their pieces to fit within that frame, but now an artist can use technology to “remove” the frame from the equation. This allows an artist/designer to get more creative with their frame through the use of cropping/borders which drastically change the way a piece feels to the viewer. I’ve personally found that effectively using a frame either in paintings or in digital designs makes a piece that much more appealing. A good example I can think of would be the “Antibes, The Pink Cloud” painting at the MFA (My favorite painting there), the artist used a gold-ish frame and it elevates the painting more. Additionally frames don’t only exist in physical/digital art, they can be found in language, for example, the beginning part of this sentence “frames don’t only exist in physical/digital art…” would frame or set-up the rest of this sentence for the reader by letting them know this sentence is going to be about how framing can be found in language. Windows and doors are obvious examples of frames, they are holes to the outside world and we’re able to see the world around us through them. A good window can change the way a space feels, and the same can be said about a good door.
