Part 1

Kazimir Malevich started to draw at age 12 and he knew at a young age that he wanted to take on an artistic career and attended many art schools in his youth. He was a Russian painter and art theorist. He founded Suprematism, which is a form of simple geometric shapes with abstract painting. He combined the elements of cubism and futurism to create an abstract geometric approach of figures in space. In his first paintings, he used geometric shapes in a limited range of colors, in black alone, or against a white background. Later on, he introduced a broader range of colors as well as triangles, circles, and curved shapes. Malevich supported the October 1917 Revolution, In the years that followed he worked in political propaganda, painting posters and contributing articles about new art to the “Anarkkhia” (Anarchy) newspaper. Malevich was very interested in the spiritual movement and in expressing a spiritual reality beyond the physical reality through his art. Malevich says, “By Suprematism I mean the supremacy of pure feeling in creative art. To the Suprematist the visual phenomena of the objective world are, in themselves, meaningless; the significant thing is feeling.” I like how his work is so simple, yet it still leaves an impact on you and you can tell he put a lot of thought into each piece. One of his works was a relatively small painting filled with a large black square in a white background. He is known especially for this piece in particular. In the museum, it acts like a sudden silence. But when socialist realism was declared the official artistic doctrine of the Soviet Union, this painting and many other works by Malevich were removed and hidden from sight. He died of cancer in 1935 and was buried in a coffin made with his own design, the image of the Black Square placed on its lid. His work became internationally famous and acclaimed, but, under Stalin, his art was thought as being anti-nature, and his works were destroyed.

Kazimir Malevich, Black Square, 1915

Kazimir Malevich uses geometric shapes in his work. A variety of rectangles, squares, triangles, and circles all combine to form a relationship with each other. The overlapping of shapes shows movement and depth in his pieces. He uses the shapes in a variety of different ways to create a sense of space within the piece and contrast with the white background. All of the selections above contain lots of shapes and creates a unity with one another. The theme of geometric shapes shows his modern approach to his work.

After reading about hierarchy I realized how important the layout of the page or advertisement is for the designer and viewer. Although the consumer may not realize it, the way information is advertised often affects whether they will buy an item or not. Using typographic and photographic information, you can express the product design in a million different ways. Scale, placement and alignment are used to create order and it makes the piece look neat and creative at the same time. Hierarchy determines the impact a message has on a viewer or consumer and this is all manipulated by the designer. Hierarchy is a way the designer can control its’ viewers and manipulate what catches their eye first by using scale and style. This reading was very interesting and opened my eyes to the possibilities hierarchy gives you in a design.

In the Tool Montage assignment, my group and I worked on finding forced connections with our listed tools. Mapping out the tools was enjoyable at times and it was fun to think about our crazy inventions!  This activity showed me how mapping works and how effective this technique can be in creating designs and projects.

Interesting Combinations:

  1. Tire + Mirrors- When you’re driving you can have a closer view on the road to help you see better.
  2. Banana + Wrench- So you can hide your wrench in the banana to carry it on you at all times without people knowing.
  3. Rubber + Wrench- You can drop the wrench without making a loud banging noise, and to comfort your hand more while using.
  4. Water bottle + Hammer- Ever get thirsty while hammering? this invention will be a convenient way to hammer and hydrate all in one.
  5. Wood + Nail- Metal nails are dangerous and can hurt bad, but if you had a wood nail it would be less dangerous and also the wood is a more stylish look to have. Also, if nailing into wood, it will look seamless, without having a metal grey colored nail stand out against the wood.
  6. Wall + Branches- This is a stylish way of hanging your clothes or anything from. The branches would be coming out of the wall, giving you plenty of storage in your room or house.
  7. Hammer + Screwdriver- This invention would be beneficial by combining two of the most commonly used tools together. being able to hammer and screw all in one will speed up the process of many projects using hammers and screwdrivers.
  8. Fur + Toolbox- This will give your toolbox a fancy look, but also it will keeps your tools from moving around a lot and help avoid making a mess in your toolbox.
  9. Monkey + Pliers- This invention will give monkeys an easier way to crack open that banana or any food they will have trouble opening.
  10. Tree + Tires- This invention will be made with trees and leaves. It is much better for the environment and will provide an interesting new look for your car.

B GD Thinking Chapter 1

Growing up I was always into making crafts and being creative with any materials I could find in my house. I have three sisters and we would all get excited about making crafts and designs when we had nothing to do as kids. I grew up loving the idea of designing and it has always been a passion of mine. I am excited to expand my knowledge of Graphic Design in this course!

Advertising                                                                                                                                                  Graphic Design is all around us everywhere we go and is changing everyday. I’m interested in the advertising side of design, I think it’s crazy how often we see designs being advertised around us daily. I found this blog very interesting, it talks about new designs, logos, typefaces, and also any new news and tricks about design.

Brand Design                                                                                                                                                Brand Design is very interesting and awesome to think about because each Brand Design is the face of a company and symbolic to what the company stands for. We all recognize the company by its brand and most of the time don’t realize how important they are to the company and for advertising that product. I found this link to a website full of unique Brand Designs, it’s so interesting to see how simple but eye catching each one is!
