Paul Rand, Interfaith Day, 1954

Though Paul Rand lived a long life full of design, in this exhibition we will be focusing more on his more simplistic artwork. The art that shows a lot with only showing very little. You will notice in these pieces, that they are not only simple, but also colorful. It was decided to use some of Paul Rand’s more simple art pieces because that is how he would prefer to work during his life.

Paul Rand, who was born Peretz Rosenbaum, was born on August 15, 1914 in Brooklyn, New York and later on passed away on November 26, 1996. He was known as one of the world’s most famous graphic designers. He created very many posters and helped business create their logo/identity, such as IBM, UPS and ABC. When Paul Rand would present his designs to clients, he would explain how his designs would meet their needs by presenting them in booklets. Rand was also very patient and clear with his clients who may have not been visual thinkers. This is rather intelligent because when explaining a design to a client it is a good idea to keep it understandable and having a patient attitude that will help make the relationship between client and designer better. In the 40’s, Paul Rand’s work in advertising helped businesses have a different way of approaching branding. He was very clever when it came to ads. Rand knew that an ad was only used to sell a product, but believed that the designer should be artistic to be able to visually convey a message. A philosophy that he followed was the use of symbolism. Rand believed that the relationship between the viewer and the designer should be formed and connected through a symbolic element and by making the abstract forms concrete to help the viewer understand the design. Without Paul Brand’s take on creating ads and logos, the world of advertisement may have been a different place.

Signature points of Paul Brand:
1. He helped art directors gain more power within corporations instead of having the copywriters in charge.
2.”He was very down-to-Earth, and fit into this Brooklyn boys’ world of corporate advertising in New York.”
3. He believes that to a serious problem, humor can serve as an aid.

Hierarchy in design is very important. It helps guide the viewers eyes throughout the page. I found it interesting that most people think that hierarchy in design is just used with words on a page, but it is so much more. Photos and images can help display hierarchy within a page or the use of images and words can help represent it as well. Most people think that when you set up a page that the most important image, word and or title belong at the top  and the goal is to make the eyes travel downwards. As a graphic designer I find this to be rather boring at times and find it more interesting and a challenge to make the reader start from a different point and make their eyes move in an unconventional way, but also be able to have them understand the flow and not get confused by what is presented to them.

Thoughts
I found this project very interesting. This is really my first experiences with mind mapping. Taking objects from my mind map and combining them was both exciting, but challenging. I found  it difficult to create pairings that I could incorporate and create multiple designs for, but it gave me the opportunity to think outside the box and get really creative.

Mind Map

This was my Mind Map.

Tool Combinations

  1. Mouse + x-acto knife= X-Acto Mouse
  2. Chainsaw + Sandpaper= Sandsaw
  3. Hammer + T-Square= Thammer
  4. MAC + Sheet Protector= Mactector
  5. Screwdriver + Screws= Screw’d
  6. Grappling Hook + Bike= Brapple
  7. Computer + Printer= Comprinter
  8. Car + Utility Knife= Utility Car
  9. Book + Keyboard= Book Board
  10. Grill + Truck= Barbecue Drive- In
  11. Mouse + Shifter= Mouster
  12. Cutting Mat + Shelf= Cutshelf
  13. Gasoline + Chainsaw= Chainline
  14. 2X4 + Ruler= 2 by Ruler
  15. Helmet + Computer= Commuter
  16. Hammer + Nails= Nailer
  17. Car + Bookcase= Read ‘n’ Go
  18. Cutting Mat + Utility Knife= Utilimat
  19. Crowbar + Filer= Crowfiler
  20. Steering Wheel + Crowbar= Steerbar
  21. Grappling Hook + Harness= The Hooker
  22. Sander + Filer= The Smoother
  23. Deck + Grill= DeRill
  24. Training Wheels + Screwdriver= Screw Wheels
  25. Mouse Pad + Cutting Mat= Mouse Mat

Chosen Ten
X-Acto Mouse
This would be interesting because it would be very useful for graphic designer’s since they usually use x-acto knives to mount their artwork and incorporating a mouse with it since they constantly use computers, obviously.
Sandsaw
I thought this would be fun to do because I could see it being a very useful object and there are a lot of different ways to combine these to objects together.
Thammer
This concept was on of the more simpler ones because both a hammer and a t-square have a similar shapes and wasn’t really difficult to design.
Screw’d
I thought this one was very practical and usually when you need to screw something you need a screwdriver and screws. Putting two in one makes it very handy.
Comprinter
I would honestly buy one of these if they actually exsisted. It makes the hassle of having to have a computer and a printer simpler and could possibly be used on the go.
Utility Car
I thought this one was fun because there were so many options for design. It was two different objects you would not usually see together.
Barbecue Driver-In
This one was a lot of fun because when people go tail-gating and have to bring a  grill, instead have the grill built in.
Mouster
This would be fun because it could be made to just an exterior design or have an actual use for it.
Commuter
I really like how catchy this name is. This is a cool concept. Instead of having to worry about holding your phone you have the internet on the top of your head.
The Hooker
This one would be fun to do because it is a really cool idea and seems like having a grappling hook on a harness would make it the easiest way you didn’t loose it.

Design in my life
I am very interested in graphic design because ever since I was a child I have been interested in art, but did not know how I was going to make a living off of it. It wasn’t until my sophomore year of high school that I found out about graphic design and started taking a tech school class on it. It sucked me in right away and I became very passionate about my art pieces. Though I did not know anything about Photoshop or how to use it, I learned from others and my teacher and was able to get the hang of not only Photoshop, but other programs as well. I know how to use Photoshop, Illustrator and I somewhat know  how to use InDesign, Muse, After Effects, Premier Pro,  and 3DS Max. I plan on majoring in Graphic Design.

Advertising  Design
An area in graphic design I am very interested in is Advertising Design. I am interested in this field because  I think advertising is a very demanding job and that’s how companies promote themselves. Advertisement is also everywhere whether people realize it or not and it is also very competitive. I am genuinely a shy, quiet person, but I believe in graphic design I am a hardworking person, especially if  I am competing against another brand that the competitor/ creator in me will come out. I also love how advertisement is also meant to draw people in, but you have to know and research the people you are trying to promote to to appeal to them.

Book Jacket Design
Another area in graphic design I am interested in is Book Jacket Design. I am interested in this field because even though there’s the saying “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover” people generally do. I believe that being able to create a cover for a book gives the designer the opportunity to be very creative, but also help the author express what the book is going to be about. I want to make book covers that people are intrigued by and would want as a poster.
