Part One – About Artist

Peter Behrens was born April 14, 1868 an died February 27, 1940. He was an artist and founder of modern objective industrial architecture and modern industrial design. As a young man he started out as an illustrator and his flowing designs, and curvilinear lines show the style of Art Nouveau. The Art Nouveau is a style of art that is haracterized by highly stylized, flowing, curvilinear designs often incorporating floral and other plant-inspired motifs. Behrens wanted to restrict every form to a two-dimensional plane, reducing everything to an ornament design. His work for the Bunte Vogel in 1899 shows how he uses the object to transform them into the border and the typography forms unity by using similar linear composition.

In his later works Peter Behrens focused more on simple geometric forms such as circle, triangles, simple lines, and squares. Using the influence of those form he designed patterns for the design of his home and also for the advertising posters for the Berlin-based electric company. He also created designs for daily used electrical products. It mainly involved copying the artistic pieces by their shape and the historical decoration (Design History Research). Behrens was the first German to create the first complex corporate identity. He connected art and industry together.

Overall Experience
The “Tool Montage” project was definitely a challenge and very time consuming.  Working in a group helped with the mind maps because it would have taken me a lot longer to come up with ideas. Everybody in the group had lots of great ideas and they allowed me to come up with unique object pairings.

Mind Map

10 Choices

  1. Shovel + Tree- I pictured the shovel as being the trunk of the tree and the top of the shovel is the tree.
  2. Worm + Shoe- The worms could replace shoes laces.
  3. Door + Teeth- The doors could be the braces on the teeth.
  4. Tree + Hands- The branches of the trees remind me of human hands reaching towards the sun.
  5. Wings + Keys- Giving the keys different form of wings makes them look a little like interesting bugs.
  6. Snake + Stethoscope- The tubing of the stethoscope would be the snakes body.
  7. Spatula + Drill- Instead of having a drill bit I would put a spatula in its place.
  8. Window + Candy- I pictured the architectural details of the window are replaced with candy such as candy cane.
  9. Shower + Flower- The flower would be the shower head or the flowers would be the shower head.
  10. Apple+ Tracks- I pictured the apple to be the tunnel where train track come out and than wrap around the apple.

My Start
When I was in high school I concentrated on studio art and photography. Since I started college I wanted to find a career that would combine all my interest such as photography, illustration, and design. As I talked to people about Graphic Design the more I became intrigued. I have always been creative and people kept telling me to pursue my passion.  Two areas of Graphic Design that interest me is Publication Design and Advertising Design.

Publication Design
Publication design has interested me more than other ares in the past and the present. I love looking at magazines (fashion, travel, home improvement, and other), newspapers and see how pictures and text come together to form a unified layout. It also makes me wonder how they choose what photographs go together or what color combinations they use to make the pages stand out to readers. I admire the designers abilities to present the periodicals in a way that’s unique and pleasing to the eye.

Advertising Design
Advertising Design has been around me as long as I can remember. No matter where I look it is there and it makes me wonder how do all these ads make themselves stand out from others. What makes them a good add and what story are they trying to tell? I like to see how photos and text were manipulated to represent that product. Some advertising I look at over and over and they can inspire a new ideas such as a character for my next project.
